SCREAM NOTE Controls and Settings

Movement, interaction, notebook UI, voice chat, and comfort options explained.

Controls and Settings

SCREAM NOTE keeps controls approachable because the real skill ceiling is social — reading friends, hiding notebook usage, and timing scares. Still, knowing every binding before a session prevents fumbling during a chase or while writing a name under pressure. This page documents default PC controls, Scream Note UI flow, audio settings, and comfort toggles worth changing on day one.

If you have not played yet, start with the getting started guide for match flow, then return here to optimize settings.

Movement and camera

SCREAM NOTE uses standard first-person controls on PC:

ActionDefault binding
Move forward / back / strafeW A S D
LookMouse
SprintLeft Shift
Jump / vault (contextual)Space
CrouchLeft Ctrl
Interact / pick up pagesE
Inventory / notebookTab or I (verify in Settings → Controls)

Rebind keys under Settings → Controls in the main menu or pause screen. There is no competitive ranked scene demanding default binds — prioritize keys your hand reaches while pretending to loot a drawer.

Scream Note UI flow

Using a cursed page is a short menu sequence:

  1. Open inventory and select an unused page.
  2. Pick a target player from the lobby list.
  3. Choose a scare category from the game’s library of 222+ jumpscares.
  4. Optionally set a delay timer (see our Scare Timer tool for practice).
  5. Confirm — the page consumes and the monster begins its script near the victim.

You can cancel before confirmation if you opened the menu by mistake. After confirmation, act innocent. Proximity voice chat will sell your alibi better if you were loudly talking about the exit on the other side of the map.

Deep mechanic notes live in the Scream Note mechanic guide.

Voice chat and social audio

Proximity voice chat means nearby players hear you louder than distant ones. This enables fake callouts — whisper near a door, shout from upstairs, or go silent when plotting. Push-to-talk vs open mic depends on your group; check Settings → Audio for input device, mic volume, and voice activation thresholds.

If you stream, enable Streamer Mode under settings and read our dedicated Streamer Mode guide for Twitch integration and audience-triggered scares.

Video and comfort settings

SCREAM NOTE includes optional jumpscares that reach outside the game window. If that sounds unpleasant on a multi-monitor desk, disable Extended / PC reach scares (wording may vary by patch) in Settings → Gameplay → Jumpscare intensity. You still get in-world scares; you just skip meta effects that touch your desktop.

Other useful toggles:

  • Field of view — slightly higher FOV helps track the chasing monster during a scare sequence.
  • Head bob / motion blur — reduce if anyone in the group gets motion sick in tight hallways.
  • Subtitle size — useful when voice chat gets loud; Steam lists subtitle support for multiple languages.
  • Master / effects / voice volumes — balance so footsteps remain audible over laughter.

Multiplayer and lobby controls

From the main menu you can Host, Join, or Quick Play depending on patch availability. Steam invites remain the most reliable way to fill an 8-player lobby. Our player count and lobby guide covers session sizes and invite troubleshooting.

In-match, there is no friendly fire in the traditional shooter sense — your weapon is the notebook. Reporting or muting uses Steam overlay options if a stranger joins public matchmaking.

Settings checklist before your first scare

  1. Confirm microphone and headphones in Windows sound panel.
  2. Set sprint and interact binds you will remember under stress.
  3. Disable PC-reach scares if anyone in the group opts out.
  4. Test voice levels in a private lobby with friends.
  5. Bookmark winning strategies if your group plays elimination.

Controls will not save you from a well-timed clown-in-the-trees scare, but they ensure you never die because you could not open the notebook menu fast enough.
